What is Itchy Eyes?

Itchy eyes is a common condition that occurs when the eyes or eye lids are irritated. I t can feel like an unpleasant itch around the eye lashes or on the clear membrane that covers the eyes.

Causes of Itchy Eyes

  • Allergies

    Itchy eyes are often caused by allergies to pollen, dust, mold, animal fur, or eye makeup. 

  • Dry eyes

    Dry eye syndrome occurs when the eyes don’t produce enough tears or the tears aren’t balanced properly. 

  • Eye infections

    Bacterial or viral infections, like conjunctivitis (pink eye), can cause itchy eyes. 

  • Eye strain

    Looking at screens for long periods, driving, or reading in poor lighting can cause eye strain and itchy eyes. 

  • Chemical irritants

    Soaps, detergents, chlorine, cigarette smoke, car exhaust, and perfume can irritate the eyes.

Symptoms of Itchy Eyes

  • Red, watery eyes
  • Clear, mucus-like discharge
  • Swollen eyes and eyelids
  • Feeling like there’s something stuck in your eye

Treatment of Itchy Eyes

Treatment options for itchy eyes will depend on the cause. Options may include certain treatments and recommendations, such as:

  • identifying the cause and avoiding it
  • applying cool or warm compresses
  • maintaining good eye hygiene
  • stopping using contact lenses or using a different type
  • regulating air temperature and moisture
  • using of artificial tears
  • cleaning the eye with a saltwater solution
  • taking antibiotics or other medications
  • using over-the-counter decongestants
  • combining decongestants and antihistamines
  • applying medication to the eyes to increase tear production
  • using oral or nasal antihistamines and mast-cell stabilizers
  • having steroid injections above the upper eyelid

A healthcare provider will discuss recommended treatments based on the condition being treated and the individual’s medical history.
